Engineers Without Borders
About
Engineers without Borders is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to support community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects.
The EWB-UTSA chapter has been at the University of Texas at San Antonio campus since 2011 and completed their first project in 2018 in Viña Vieja, Peru. The chapter consists of students from multiple disciplines (mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, finance, geology, and more), two mentors, and a Faculty Advisor. The students in this chapter are involved in outreach, design, fundraising, and implementation of sustainable humanitarian projects. The project in Peru dealt with a water distribution and storage system that provided clean water to a community of 110 families.
Currently, EWB-UTSA has taken on their second major project in La Esperanza, Guatemala. Like the Peru project, this new undertaking in Guatemala also deals with a water distribution system. The community has access to electricity and includes over 200 people, 29 of which are school children. The municipality (San Martín Jilotepeque) will be drilling a well where EWB will source the distribution system. EWB will also install household taps for access to all families of the community. An assessment trip was taken by a team of EWB officers in March 2020 to get to know the community and the area in which they live in as well as discuss a feasible plan of action to carry out this project. This project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2025.
